Equipped with advanced BSL-2 laboratories, the department provides hands-on microbiology training, fosters research and innovation, and prepares skilled microbiologists for healthcare, diagnostics, public health, research, and biotech careers.

 

The Department of Microbiology at Santosh Medical College is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and diagnostic services. It plays a crucial role in understanding microbial infections, host–pathogen interactions, immunology, epidemiology, and disease prevention. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and molecular diagnostics, including a well-established BSL-2 facility that supports advanced training and research.

 

Students gain comprehensive hands-on experience in clinical microbiology, antimicrobial resistance profiling, biosafety practices, culture techniques, and infection control. Expert faculty members foster a strong research culture, critical thinking, and innovation in infectious disease surveillance and management. With emphasis on practical exposure, interdisciplinary learning, and modern diagnostic technologies, the department prepares students for diverse careers in clinical laboratories, research organisations, hospitals, public health sectors, biotech industries, and academia.

Program Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of microbiology, including the diversity, structure, and function of microorganisms.
  • Comprehend the role of microorganisms in causing infectious diseases and their impact on human health.
  • Learn laboratory techniques and procedures for the isolation, cultivation, and identification of microorganisms.
  • Understand the principles and methods of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and resistance mechanisms.
  • Analyze and interpret laboratory results related to microbial infections and apply them to clinical scenarios.
  • Comprehend the principles of immunology and its relationship with microbial infections and immune responses.
  • Understand the epidemiology of infectious diseases, including transmission, prevention, and control measures.
  • Comprehend the ethical and legal aspects related to handling infectious agents in laboratory settings and patient care.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the context of microbial identification, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Engage in practical experiences, including internships or clinical rotations, to apply theoretical knowledge in laboratory settings and healthcare contexts.

Educational Qualification: The student who passess 10+2 from PCB from Recognized Board with 45% aggregate Marks for General & 40% for OBC/SC/ST.

 

Required Subjects: Candidates must have studied Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as mandatory subjects in their 10+2 level.

 

Course Duration: 3.5 Years and (6 months Internship).

  • Clinical Microbiologist: Lead advanced diagnostic services, interpret laboratory findings, and support infection prevention in hospitals and healthcare systems
  • Molecular Diagnostics Specialist: Perform PCR-based and molecular testing for infectious diseases, genetic disorders, and emerging pathogens.
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (Microbiology): Process and analyse clinical samples while ensuring quality standards and accurate diagnostic reporting.
  • Infection Control & Quality Officer: Develop and monitor infection prevention protocols aligned with NABH/JCI and international healthcare standards.
  • Public Health Microbiologist: Support disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and antimicrobial resistance monitoring programs.
  • Research & Biotechnology Scientist: Contribute to vaccine development, antimicrobial research, and biotechnology innovation in pharma and R&D sectors.
