An optometrist is a health care professional who is concerned with examination, diagnosis and treatment of eyes. Their area of responsibility lies in determining one's refractive error and prescribing appropriate correction. They also deal with eye testing, also known as Vision Screening in the medical language, diagnosis of visual problems, optometric counseling of patients with partial sight, colour blindness and hereditary vision defects, designing and fitting of spectacles, contact lens etc.

 

Program Objectives:

  • Can Record Vision
  • Can assess error of refraction & measure it with retinoscopy and subjective refraction.
  • Can use common instruments & equipments related to ophthalmology.
  • Can perform procedures like Tonometry, Syringing, Fundus photo, Slit lamp examination, Ophthalmology, Corneal staining, FB removal, Dressing of eye etc.
  • Can prepare & prescribe glasses/spectacles and low vision aids.
  • Can assist common ophthalmic surgeries,
  • Can play role in Blindness control programmes run by government,
  • Is aware of latest machines like LASERS, OCT, Femtosecond etc.
  • To be eligible to join this degree courses in ophthalmic technology one should be 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as the main subjects with 35% marks. (From U.P. board or any other recognized board.)
  • Candidates must have completed age of 17 years of age as on 31st December of admission year. There is no maximum age limit for admission.

The course outline for a Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistant may vary from institution to institution. However, here is a general overview of the topics covered in the program:

 

First Year:

  • Only basic idea of General Anatomy & Physiology (Cytology, Histology, Osteology and only basis of all organ systems of the body)
  • Only basics of relevant Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology & Ocular Pharmacology.
  • Detailed Ocular Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Basic physics related to light and physical, physiological optics.
  • Hand hygiene & prevention of cross infection.
  • Basic life support (BLS) & Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

 

Second Year:

  • Details of Diseases of Eye.
  • Nursing Procedures like vital recording, IM/IV/SC injection, Oxygen therapy, Nebulization, and IV infusion.
  • Mechanical optics and Lenses, Lenses prescription.
  • Instruments and equipment used in the eye.
  • Community ophthalmology.
  • Drugs used in Optometry.
