Overview

The Department of Microbiology at Santosh Medical College is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and diagnostic services. It plays a crucial role in understanding microbial infections, host–pathogen interactions, immunology, epidemiology, and disease prevention. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and molecular diagnostics, including a well-established BSL-2 facility that supports advanced training and research.

Students gain comprehensive hands-on experience in clinical microbiology, antimicrobial resistance profiling, biosafety practices, culture techniques, and infection control. Expert faculty members foster a strong research culture, critical thinking, and innovation in infectious disease surveillance and management. With emphasis on practical exposure, interdisciplinary learning, and modern diagnostic technologies, the department prepares students for diverse careers in clinical laboratories, research organisations, hospitals, public health sectors, biotech industries, and academia.

Program Objectives:

• Develop advanced knowledge and understanding of the principles of medical microbiology.
• Acquire specialized knowledge in various branches of medical microbiology, including bacteriology, virology, mycology, and Parasitology,immunology,Serology, Mycobacteriology, Molecular lab and Hospital infections control Fully automated microbiology laboratory.
• Master advanced laboratory techniques and methodologies for the isolation, identification, and characterization of microorganisms.
• Analyze and interpret complex microbial data, including genomic and molecular information, for diagnostic and research purposes.
• Understand the pathogenesis of microbial infections and their impact on human health, including host-pathogen interactions.
• Investigate antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and develop strategies for their control and management.
• Evaluate and implement advanced diagnostic methods and technologies in medical microbiology.
• Comprehend the principles of immunology and immunotherapeutic approaches to combat infectious diseases.
• Engage in research activities, including thesis projects, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in medical microbiology.
• Participate in practical training, internships, or clinical attachments to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain hands-on experience.
